For nearly a decade, I’ve had the privilege of volunteering my time and photography skills at Salt Lake County Animal Services, a journey that’s not just close to my heart but has become a part of who I am.
While many talented pet photographers out there contribute to animal welfare through fundraising, I’ve chosen a slightly different path. Donating money is great, but to me it feels a bit too removed. I prefer to be “in the trenches” so to speak. Every other week, armed with my camera and a heart full of purpose, I step into the shelter to photograph the adorable, adoptable dogs waiting for their chance to shine. I believe in the power of a photograph—the way it can capture a soulful gaze or a playful spark—and I’m committed to ensuring that each dog is seen in the best possible light, quite literally!
And it’s an amazing feeling to know that a dog has been adopted because of a photograph I have taken. I know how much my dogs have changed my life, and if a photograph can change a dog’s life, and that dog will change their human’s life, that ripple-effect is breath-taking. I am a part of something bigger than myself when I do this, and it is so important to me to take these photographs.
